ROSKILDE FJORD

Sea Felt and Brown Alga

(Pilayella littoralis), (Ectocarpus siliculosus).

Sea felt and brown algae form continuous 10cm thick carpets on large areas of the fjord bed. They are very loosely connected to the bottom and are found mostly in still, shallow water during the summer. If they are taken out of the water, on a fishing line for example, they collapse completely into a gooey mass. In the rare incidents of bottom turnover in the fjord, these algae come up to the surface, where they float around in large sheets. They frequently compete with mussels for space on the fjord bed.
