ROSKILDE FJORD

Garfish or Needlefish

(Belone belone).

Studies by the Laboratory of Fish Ecology have found only very few garfish. This does not give an entirely accurate picture, as in spring and early summer garfish come into the fjord to spawn. At that time of the year anglers swarm around the narrow passages in the fjord, and often have something to take home for dinner. Garfish can also be seen when they leap in the water, or you might find their green skeletons on the beach. They just happen to come into the fjord when the white-tailed eagles have young, and as these fish are often to be seen near the surface of the water they are easy prey for the eagles, which often use them to feed their young. The fish biologists did not encounter garfish because their sampling was done in the autumn.
