ROSKILDE FJORD

Common Shore Crab

(Carcinus maenas).

Crabs abound in the salty northern part of the fjord, where their numbers have risen steeply in recent years, whilst they are rarely found in the southern part. They also prefer relatively shallow water.

Crabs play an important role in the ecology of the northern end of the fjord. In their larval and juvenile stages they are an important food for several species, and the adult crabs eat large quantities of mussels.
