ROSKILDE FJORD

Passerines

(Passeriformes).

As well as the individual species discussed, there are passerines breeding on the islands in the fjord, some of them found where there are trees and bushes, others in the meadow areas. They include:

  • Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis). Øksneholm, Lilleø, Eskilsø and others.
  • Cinereous Bunting (Emberiza cineracea). Seen occasionally in reed marshes. In the autumn they are often found in beds of grass-leaved orache, where they forage for seeds.
  • Pied Wagtail (Motacilla alba alba). On the medium-sized and large islands
  • Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava). On Eskilsø.
  • Skylark (Aladua arvensis). Øksneholm and Eskilsø.
  • Hooded Crow (Corvus corona corvix). On islands where an elder tree or the like provides a nesting place. It is pitiful to see how fledgling crows are bullied by Herring Gull, and many crows never grow up to leave their birthplace. A crow’s nest was once found on the ground.
  • Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus). Frequently seen on Eskilsø, but may be found on all the larger islands.
  • Warblers (Sylviidae). On Peberholmen, Hyldeholm off Skuldelev, and Eskilsø there is garden-like vegetation where several species of warbler breed.
