ROSKILDE FJORD

Blak

Blak, from the east. It is smaller than many suburban gardens..

Blak lies just southeast of Vædderholm, which is the long south-eastern point on Eskilsø. It is a very small island but it has a huge number of breeding birds. The large colony of common gull, with about 100 nests, completely dominates the island, but mute swans, arctic tern, oystercatchers and mallard also breed there regularly.

A large rock pushed up onto Blak by ice.

To the south west of Blak there is open water as far as Bognæs. (This broader part of the fjord is called Bredningen). In hard winters this can create large ice packs, and rocks weighing tons can be pressed up onto the island. Just to the south west of Blak a large submerged Stone Age settlement has been found.
