ROSKILDE FJORD

Harbour Porpoise

(Phocoena phocoena)

The porpoise, the only cetacean that breeds in Denmark, is seen in the fjord almost every summer, but usually only north of Frederikssund.

In April 2007 a single rare Risso’s dolphin (Grampus Griseus) strayed into the fjord. Despite resolute attempts to drive it out again it died of starvation in the middle of April at the end of Borrevejle Vig. It is now in the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen.

The Risso’s dolphin attracted a lot of attention.
