ROSKILDE FJORD

Visiting the Fjord

Here is a map of Europe showing the location of Roskilde Fjord.

The southern part of Roskilde Fjord, up to and including Jylllinge Holme, is now to be included in the National Park ’Skjoldungernes Land’.

If this portal has made you want to visit Roskilde Fjord there are many ways to experience it at first hand. The Nature Conservation Act establishes the right to walk along the coast and this effectively gives access along almost all of the coast of Roskilde Fjord. A notable exception is Bløden, by Risø, which is closed off all year round.

In the birds’ breeding season, from 1st April to 15th July, you may not land on the islands, and in Bognæs a small area is closed off during the white-tailed eagle’s breeding season (1st February to 31st July).

The Fjord Trail, which extends all the way from Rørvig to Hundested along the coasts of both Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord, offers a rich variety of experiences. It does not always follow the coastline exactly, but you can make side trips on foot down to the shore.

Especially attractive places include Bognæs, Boserup Forest, Østskoven, Jægerspris Nordskov, Selsø, Kattinge Sø and Bolund.

On the water there are very few restrictions. During the birds’ breeding season, from 1st April to 15th July, you may not land on, or come within 50 metres of, the islands. Bløden, by Risø, is closed all year round. In a number of areas motor boats may not sail above 8 knots, and there are restrictions on hunting. Contact the Danish Nature Agency for details.

And please be considerate and avoid behaviour that might bother other visitors to the fjord.

If you do not have your own boat, you can either hire a canoe or have a ride on one of the tour boats that sail on the fjord. Sagafjord sails from Roskilde and Skjelskør sails from Frederikssund. It is also possible to have a ride on a Viking ship from the Viking Ship Museum or the Maritime Research Centre.
