ROSKILDE FJORD

Little Grebe

(Podiceps ruficollis).

Eskilsø is the only one of the fjord islands where the Little Grebe breeds. It has been found both on the little pond at the farm and on Store Rørsø, after its restoration. The Little Grebe has also bred in the reeds along the coast at the southern end of Borrevejle Vig. The October population is increasing, whilst the January population is very variable, perhaps because the ice in hard winters drives the ducks into the openings in the ice.
