ROSKILDE FJORD

Brisling, or European Sprat

(Sprattus sprattus).

According to studies by The Laboratory of Fish Ecology, the brisling is the most important species, by weight, in the southern part of the fjord, whilst it comes in at only third place in the northern part. Brisling strongly resembles its bigger relative, the herring, but can be distinguished by its sharp belly. Brisling are found mainly in the wider parts of the fjord, in slightly deeper water. There is practically no fishing for brisling in Roskilde Fjord.
