ROSKILDE FJORD

Lumpsucker, or Lumpfish

(Cyclopterus lumpus).

The lumpsucker is common round the coast of North Zealand but occasionally comes right down to the southern end of Roskilde Fjord in the early spring months. Here the large female spawns its delicious roe (known here as ‘Danish caviar’) in shallow water, after which the smaller male watches over the eggs.
