ROSKILDE FJORD

Ringed Plover

(Charadrius hiaticula).

A Ringed Plover at its nest.

There are only about ten pairs of Ringed Plover and the population has been declining since the turn of the century. The biggest colony (about 50% of the total population) is on Lilleø, but there are also quite a few on Eskilsø when there are no foxes there. Ringed Plovers often used to build their nests in the same places as Little Tern (Sterna albifrons).
