ROSKILDE FJORD

Red-necked Grebe

(Podiceps griseigena).

Brooding Red-necked Grebe.

The Red-necked Grebe lives in fresh- or brackish water and nests in reed beds. After the restoration of the lake called Store Rørsø on Eskilsø in 1985 the population there (and thus in the whole fjord) has increased significantly, but this increase, starting in the mid 1990s, has recently changed to a decline. As well as on Eskilsø there is a small population on Skovholmene in the south western part of the fjord.

The nests of Red-necked Grebe are hardly distinguishable from those of the Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) and the two species may therefore be confused.

In the area between Risø and Bolund, as well as on Sælklemmerne, south of Eskilsø, there are often a lot of roosting Red-necked Grebe in spring and summer.
