ROSKILDE FJORD

Shelduck

(Tadorna tadorna).

The Shelduck breeds on most of the islands in the fjord, but far from regularly. Quite a few broods are also hatched elsewhere, and the parents can take these broods out to the fjord from nesting sites some distance inland. It is difficult to count breeding Shelduck pairs reliably so the population development graphs must be viewed with considerable caution, but there is scarcely any doubt that the breeding population is in decline. The October numbers are growing (fewer than 100), whilst January numbers vary widely from year to year (fewer than 700).
