ROSKILDE FJORD

Baltic Prawn and Brown Shrimp

(Palaemon adspersus), (Crangon crangon).

There are large numbers of both Baltic prawns and brown shrimps in the fjord. The Baltic prawn, which likes to live in shallow water where eelgrass grows, dominates in the southern part of the fjord, where some of the densest populations in Denmark are found. The brown shrimp, which prefers a bed without vegetation, is more common in the northern part. These prawns and shrimps are second only to mussels in their importance for the eco-system of the fjord, in that they both eat a wide range of smaller creatures and are themselves eaten by larger species. Water quality in the fjord is also affected by them as they eat large quantities of zooplankton. The Baltic prawn, which is one of the most delicious things to be found in our waters, is the next most important catch in the fjord after the eel.
