ROSKILDE FJORD

Saltmarsh Rush

(Juncus gerardi).

Most people think saltmarsh rush is a grass, but it is in fact a rush. Like saltmarsh grass, it grows in the outer, saltier parts of salt meadows and marshes, hence the name. It is dominant only on the Hesteholme in Katting Vig. These low islets off Askehoved are grazed by cattle that wade out from the salt meadows on Bognæs. Saltmarsh rush is also found on most of the islands in the fjord, with the exception of Lejre Vig.
